ABSTRACT
In Roraima, the prejudice historically ingrained generated and still generates negative linguistic beliefs and attitudes related to the culture and the speech ofmigrants from the state of Maranhão and currently from Venezuela. This prejudice is present in the most distinct social spheres and consequently in school. In the educational context, diverse social and linguistic conflicts happen, and even those with technical knowledge about linguistic diversity, its causes and consequences can sometimes show actions that reinforce stigmatization towards the origin and linguistic variety of portions of the population. Concerning these aspects, this research objective to investigate the linguistic beliefs and attitudes of Portuguese language teachers of the state of Roraima in relation to the diatopic stigmatized variations (the Maranhense variety and the spoken language of Venezuelan immigrants) present in the classroom and to correlate them to the teachers training and their pedagogical practices. This research is developed in the area of Sociolinguistics (LABOV, 2008 [1972]), that correlates linguistic and social facts (BORTONI-RICARDO, 2004, 2005), that works with the phenomena of the language in use, based on the relation between language and society and addressed to the reality of the students; and in Social Psychology (LAMBERT, LAMBERT, 1981 [1964]), area on which are based the study on beliefs and attitudes The research data were collected through the application of questionnaires composed by questions of general information, beliefs test (CYRANKA, 2007), attitudes test (LAMBERT et al., 1960) and open questions. As a result, it was observed that teachers have negative attitudes related to the Maranhão variety and to the speech of Venezuelan immigrants, linked to the beliefs and evaluative perspective of "right" and "wrong", advocated by the principle of language teaching based on prescriptive grammar, related to the teacher professional training.
